Final HAlMan webinar: Manganese production, reimagined – from HAlMan research to industrial reality

Halman webinar

What will it take to bring lower-carbon manganese production closer to industrial use? After four years of collaborative research, testing and development, the HAlMan consortium invites industry, researchers and policymakers to its final webinar.

The session covers the whole project. It looks at the main achievements and the challenges along the way, how the process performs environmentally and economically, and the most promising routes to industrial use and market applications. Participants will see what HAlMan has achieved, what still needs to be addressed and where development could go next.

Presentations and speakers

HAlMan: Four years of progress, results and the road ahead

Dr. Maria Wallin and Prof. Jafar Safarian, project coordinators, NTNU
An overview of four years of consortium work: key research results, tests and challenges, possible next steps after the project ends, and where to find the publications and other materials.

A life cycle perspective on environmental impacts of the HAlMan process

Athina Preveniou, chemical engineer and LCA analyst, Admiris
The scope of the project’s Life Cycle Assessment, the life cycle stages examined, the key environmental findings, and how LCA supports better decisions on sustainability.

Techno-economic assessment of HAlMan and the factors shaping its competitiveness

Behrouz Kiani, Research Associate, Imperial College London
A comparison of capital costs, operating costs and break-even prices for HAlMan ferromanganese production in South Africa, Greece and Norway. It also covers how low-carbon electricity, aluminium-scrap availability, waste-heat recovery and carbon pricing decide when the process can compete.

From HAlMan results to a competitive first application

Tom Hills, Innovation Manager, Leilac (part of the Calix group)
Why hydrogen pre-reduction has emerged as the leading near-term pathway, what a competitive first offering could keep, simplify or introduce in stages, and what must be defined before moving to an industrial application.

Value to Customer: From HAlMan results to market applications

Dr. Paraskevi Efstathiou, Financial Sustainability Project Manager, Admiris
The main findings of the Value-to-Customer analysis, the most promising applications for HAlMan’s products and co-products, and what is still needed to bring them closer to market.
